Samsung Battery Recall

Apparently only the Korean Market replacement for the time being:

Quoting Chosun Ilbo, The Korea Herald says that Samsung planned to exchange batteries of all customers free of charge, but it's now considering either a refund or a full phone replacement. This affects only the Korean market for now, where Samsung sold more than 400,000 units since August 19th.

Samsung concluded that the faulty batteries are to blame for the explosions. Samsung SDI is the group within Samsung that makes batteries for the Galaxy Note 7. That is, Samsung SDI produces the battery cell, but the battery pack production is outsourced to other firms. Korean ITM Semiconductor produces the battery pack for the Galaxy Note 7's that are sold in Korea. ITM's batteries seem to have been the ones that exploded. Meanwhile, most phones sold in China are going to have battery packs from Chinese company Amperex Technology.

The Herald says that Samsung plans to go forward with the September 1st and September 2nd Galaxy Note 7 launches in China and Europe, respectively.

The Samsung official told Yonhap News Agency that the cause of the reported explosions has been traced to the battery of the new phablet.

"The most important thing is the safety of our customers and we don't want to disappoint our loyal customers," said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

He said Samsung is expected to announce the result of its investigation into the cause of the reported explosions, as well as comprehensive countermeasures either this weekend or early next week at the latest.

"Products installed with the problematic battery account for less than 0.1 percent of the entire volume sold. The problem can be simply resolved by changing the battery, but we'll come up with convincing measures for our consumers," said the official.

The official said the company's announcement of the recall is unlikely on Friday because Samsung is in talks with Verizon of the U.S. and other business partners on the issue. "Global discussions are under way about matters such as how to deal with products delivered to dealers. Results of the investigation and relevant countermeasures will be made public this weekend or early next week at the latest."

Being reported that Samsung UK has stopped shipments to suppliers and no more to be shipped out until a resolution is found. I hope that the ones at fault can be identified and we don't have a total recall.
